Division A - GRAND FINAL - A THRILLER !!
By Gemma Fornal(Wild Buffaloes)
The Thunderbirds have claimed the Broomball Mixed A Grade title after a thrilling match against the Sky Devils at Penrith Ice Palace on Monday night.
The Sky Devils came out firing at the initial face-off but could not get past goalkeeper Dane Hansen.
Both teams exchanged frequent shots on goal throughout the first half but were unable to get the ball into the back of the net.
The pace picked up in the last minute of the first half after the Sky Devils' captain Con Sourlangos took a shot from a ball rebounded off the goal post, only to be denied again by Hansen.
Goalkeeper Scott Murray saved a Thunderbirds' reply shot, keeping the score at nil-all at half time.
The game was still fast-paced and equally matched after the commencement of the second half.
After a strong, curving backhand shot from Thunderbirds' captain Saxon Hooper was saved by Hansen, the Sky Devils' Con Sourlas stole the ball against the run of play, only to have his powerful, on-target shot denied by the fingertips of Murray.
With only one and a half minutes left on the clock, Thunderbirds' Troy Carroll took the ball almost the length of the ice and took a shot that went wide of the goal.
Carroll was unlucky again just 15 seconds later when another desperate shot went wide.
Neither team was able to score before the end of regular time.
In extra time, five minutes are added to the clock, the goalkeepers leave the ice and the number of people per team is reduced to four (two males and two females).
After the face-off, Hooper gained possession but was shut down by Con Sourlangos, whose own reply shot went wide.
Again, both teams exchanged shots on goal but defence was better than attack.
Of particular note was the sometimes miracle defence work of Thunderbirds' Angela Nasr who managed to block repeated powerful shots from Sourlangos.
The buzzer sounded for the end of the overtime period, and with still no goals on the scoreboard, the game went into sudden death overtime.
A Hooper cross to Carroll was right on target, however the resulting shot missed the goal.
This was quickly followed by a strong shot from Sky Devils' Tracy Ivin that was blocked by the hand of Hooper.
The tables were turned when Ivin then blocked a strategic move from Hooper at the other end of the ice.
Nasr's defensive skills again prevented a Sky Devils goal as she fed the ball to Carroll for the start of some dangerous Thunderbirds teamwork in attack.
Hooper was unable to score from right in front of goals as the Sky Devils' Kerry Baxter blocked the shot.
After a decision that could have seen the end of the match, Carroll was given a two minute penalty for an illegal stick-check.
Despite being a man down, the Thunderbirds rallied and managed to hold out until Carroll's return.
Almost as soon as Carroll set foot back on the ice, Hooper gained possession and took the ball in towards goal. He then passed squarely to Carroll, who was unmarked.
Carroll then blasted the ball into the back of the net, securing the second A Grade title for the Thunderbirds out of four grand final appearances.
"It's about time" said Carroll after the game.
Like the large crowd in attendance, goalkeeper Scott Murray was impressed by the quality of the fast-paced game; "This was one of the best games of broomball I've seen in two years - absolutely unbelievable, and to be a part of it was just fantastic."

Division B - GRAND FINAL - Phoenix vs Polar Bears
Phoenix won the last encounter between these two B division heavy weights but Polar Bears have beaten Phoenix before so it was anyones game. Polar Bears got off to a great start working possession and creating early chances. Phoenix though were soaking up the pressure and countering on Polar Bear errors. The opening goal came from the new Gold Crown of Luke Petelczyc when he fired a hard shot from out wide near the blue line into the top corner. Neither team could change the score line by half time and they went to the break 1-0 Polar Bears. Phoenix stepped up the pressure in the second half injecting injured Cliff Pace into the line up and moving tough defender Christene Deng into goals. However it was Mark Kim for Polar Bears providing the cushion with a break away goal making it 2-0 Polar Bears. Instead of dropping their bundle Phoenix lifted again on the back of good support from the large crowd and on a break away of their own Matt Robson flicked across to Ben Robson who put it past keeper Andrew Leahy. Phoenix were desperate to score in the finals minutes and Polar Bears desperate to stop them, which they did to claim their first B division title in 4 attempts. A great season by both teams. Especially Phoenix who have come from C grade making the B division final in their debut season. Great season guys.. see you all next year.

Division C - GRAND FINAL - Another THRILLER !!
Can Openers Vs. Icebergs ( C Grand Final )
On every occasion this match up has produced an outstanding game, this time was no different. Can Openers defense once again proved frustrating for the Icebergs full court team attack. Although with most the possession of the first half, Icebergs looked like their only chance to score would be from a heat seeking missile... it never came. 0-0 half time and Can Openers knew how important it was for them to score before full time, created several opportunities, only to be denied by some good keeping by Garry Mitchell and Craig Loughlin-Smith. In turn, Icebergs also started to lift their tempo, some superb passing forcing opportunities to arise, also to be denied by keeper Bob Irwin. All this, and still normal time ended at 0-0. 5 mins of 4 on 4 extra time was now required. The team to adapt first would surely win this game. Icebergs, still with their full court team work got the early goal through Aaron Walsh. Cheers went up for the Icebergs, and the celebrations begun, only to be told that there was still 4 mins on the clock and the game wasn't over. Eventually the game restarted, and in no time Tim Edwards made the score 2-0 Icebergs. 2 goals in 3 mins seemed impossible for the Can Openers but they were going to give it their best. Anth Courtney doing exactly that taking the score to 2-1 Icebergs. 1 minute remaining. Could Can Openers get the quick goal to take it into sudden death overtime?....... Unfortunately not. Icebergs winning in extra time 2-1. 3 goals in the five minute extra time period, showed how important the keepers were in this game. Congratulations to both teams, who played an outstanding season.

69er's Vs. Flaming Tomatos ( D Grand Final )
Flaming Tomatos, having never beaten a full side, seemed to be in luck with 69ers only managing to field a 5 person team. So it began with a period of very scrappy play, before both teams sorted themselves out. About 10 minutes in, Flaming Tomatos' Jason Solomon made a break away, running it down field, drawing the keeper to one side and passing it off to Darren Pearce who polished it off. Things looked good for the Tomatos, but 69ers fought back well. With 3 minutes in the 1st remaining, Anne Greentree stole the ball from the Tomatos passed to Jay Schmidt who slammed it home, taking the half time score to 1-1. In the second half, Flaming Tomatos luck had run out, 69ers finding one of their estranged players in Ian Ahern giving them a full side for the second half. Soon enough 69ers were on the board again, Jay Schmidt launching one from wide and a fair way out. Tomatos at this stage ruing their missed opportunities in the first couldn't break through the full teamed 69ers, but did well not to let another one in. 2-1 69ers.

Division C - Week 20
Monkey Magic Vs. Icebergs ( C Preliminary Final)
Earlier on in the season, it was predicted that this could be the matchup in the final, and anyone who watched last night's match would be forgiven for mistaking it as the final. The standard of broomball was at a high, as was the desperation shown by both teams. Both teams had early chances before Icebergs' Kurt Briggs found himself with a bit of time midway through the first, and fired a rocket home for the first goal of the match. Icebergs had a few more chances before half time, but several good saves by Monkey Magic keeper Aaron Toomey, took match in to half time with a 1-0 scoreline to Icebergs. After a quick opening exchange in the second, it was Icebergs once again finding a way through, Garry Mitchell initially playing the ball off his foot in to the keeper, then gathering the rebound on his stick and put it away. 2-0 Icebergs. With 10 minutes left on the clock, the game was far from over. Monkey Magic found a new level (somewhere) and started to apply some real pressure on the Icebergs defence, and were eventually rewarded when Sara Kristof passed off to brother James Kristof who hammered one home from a seemingly impossible sideline position. 2-1 Icebergs with about 7 minutes remaining. Icebergs created a few chances to restore the two goal lead but there was a huge keeper in the form of Aaron Toomey in the way. In the dying minutes the ball found itself loose in the Icebergs defensive half. In amongst what can only be described as a mess of desperation, Monkey Magic failed to make solid contact with the ball. Final score was 2-1 Icebergs. Icebergs now play Can Openers in next week's C-Grade Final.

Ryan Findlayson 50 Games for Guinness in B Division
Ryan Findlayson celebrated his 50th B division game in style fireing the elimination final match winning goal into the top corner shattering every dream of the young and classy Western Scorpions. Ryan has played every season since the start for Guinness and is currently 12th all time for points (Pretty good considering he plays half of every game in goals). He has played in one grand final going down to Steelers and Guinness has made it to the preliminary final every other season. Ryan has now also played 26 games for A division side Slytherin. He has also represented NSW at the last 2 national championships.

Division A - Week 19
Sky Devils vs Slytherin (A Elimination Final)
Slytherin coming off a good solid season finishing 4th and Sky Devils the form team of the competition not dropping a game in the third and final round of competition. With a 3-1 win last week vs Slytherin, Sky Devils were moving into the game as favourites. The game started evenly and even with Slytherin missing play maker Steve Timmins they applied plenty of pressure to the scrambling Sky Devils defence. With 8 minutes remaining in the 1st half, a Tracy Ivin ball was centred by Andrew Nicholson around the keeper for John Skiadas to hit home into the empty net from point blank range. The second half saw both teams create some good chances only to be foiled by the keeper at both ends. In the end the single goal was enough to eliminate Slytherin and progress Sky Devils into the preliminary final. A good season for Slytherin making the finals in their second season finishing in front of quality teams Mighty Ducks and Wild Buffaloes after failing to win a game last season.
Thunderbirds vs Sawawawas (A Qualifying Final)
Sawawawas were confident of qualifying having a 3-0 win/loss record over minor premiers ThunderBirds in the regular season. And they started on fire permanently camped in the ThunderBirds defensive half raining shots on goal. However a good mix of skill, tenacious defence (especially by Angela Nasr) and some good old fashioned good luck denied the Sawawawas the opening goal. Nil all at half time. The second half was similar except ThunderBirds began to set up some offence of their own, however still neither team could break the dead lock. Until with only three minutes to go Saxon Hooper on a break away beat a defender and to the call of "Saxon, your my hero" from the crowd (a sentiment of one of the male polar bears) scored to secure the first A division grand final spot. Thunderbirds 4th Grand Final in as many seasons. Sawawawas now had to back up against in form, on fire Sky Devils in the preliminary final to finalise the gand final positions. Thunderbirds vs Sky Devils/Sawawawas??
Sawawawas vs Sky Devils (A Preliminary Final)
Sky Devils looked gone sitting on the bottom of the ladder with only 5 games to play in the season. Now after winning their last five and eliminating Slytherin they were one game away from their 4th grand final appearence in succession. In their way young guns Sawawawas lead by Pete Yabsley and Sam Boer. Rock solid defence vs exciting attackers set the game up to be a classic. Controlling possession Sky Devils eeked out the first goal after five minutes, dumping the ball into the goal mouth and Shannon Jorda combined with John Skiadas to score. Half time score 1 nil Sky Devils. Early in the second half Shannon Jorda grabbed the ball and floated accross the goal face before slamming his and Sky Devils second goal home. Sawawawas heads dropped and Sky Devils increased their defensive efforts. However as the game looked to meander to a 2-0 win for Sky Devils, Pete Yabsley took a long shot and drove it past the keeper making it 2-1 with 2 minutes to go. The goal lifted the Sawawawas and they pressed hard but the experienced Sky Devils controlled possession for the last two minutes and held out. Final score 2-1 Sky Devils. So for the 4th time in as many seasons it is a Sky Devils vs ThunderBirds grand final.

09-DEC-2002
Division B - Week 19
Guinness vs Western Scorpions (B Elimination Final)
Western Scorpions were coming into this game with some great form. A 9-2 thumping of Golden Falcons and a 3-1 win vs Phoenix to finish the season had the pre season favourites and third placed Guinness concerned. And Guinness got what they expected, a very tough game with Western Scorpion's small brigade running rampant. Nil all at half time set up a great finish to a very fast game. The second half continued to be fast and the Western Scorpions were unlucky not to take the lead with five minutes to go when Tim Edwards broke from half way, beat the keeper only to hit the post. Just when overtime looked likely a centred ball by Jo Mitchell was trapped and launched into the top corner by Ryan Findlayson with only one minute forty-five on the clock. Guinness were able to hold on and eliminate Western Scorpions from the finals. Watch out for the Scorpions next year. Final Score 1-0 Guinness.
Polar Bears vs Phoenix (B Qualifying Final)
The first placed Polar Bears scored first through Mark Kim and through good control and possession seemed like they were going to take the game. However Phoenix sat back and absorbed the pressure and waited for their chances. Two defensive lapses saw Stephen Clarke and Ben Robson score on break aways to take the game 2-1. Phoenix straight into next weeks grand final in their debut season, a great effort as the team came from C grade last season after winning it in sudden death overtime vs 69ers. Polar Bears now had to play Guinness in the preliminary final.
Polar Bears vs Guinness (B Preliminary Final)
0 - 0 at 1/2 time
0 - 0 at full time
0 - 0 after 5 minutes OT period
1 - 0 Polar Bears 4 minutes into Sudden Death OT
Polar Bears into the grand final after Kerry Baxter drove home the winner deep into the sudden death period. The longest recorded game in Penrith Broomball History. Sets up a B grade final between the two most consistent teams of B division, Phoenix vs Polar Bears. Is both teams debut grand final appearences in B grade. Phoenix may hold the slight edge winning their last two encounters, however Polar Bears do have the record for Phoenix's greatest defeat a 4-0 thrashing earlier this season.

05-NOV-2002
Division C - Week 19
Can Openers Vs. Icebergs ( C Qualifying Final 1 Vs. 2)
This was a game of two conlicting styles, both used very effectively. Can Openers with their very deffensive setup, agains full court team play of the Icebergs. Icebergs had periods where they were just passing the ball in the perimeter of attack, looking for a hole to penetrate, but it never came. Can Openers three man attack counter attacking at every opportunity, but the great scrambling defense of Icebergs restricting them from a close range, or clear shot. Unfortunately the winning goal did come from an Icebergs error. A fumble in defense gave the opportunity to a fast paced Aaron Calfas, who still had to beat a charging keeper to put away the only goal of a very high quality match (10:43 to go in the 2nd half). 1-0 Can Openers. Can Openers now have qualified for the C grade final.
Monkey Magic Vs. Allsorts ( C Elimination Final 3 Vs. 4)
Allsorts just scraping through to the elimination final were going to have to play at their peak against the Monkey Magic side who had third place cemented a fairway out from finals time. An early goal to James Kristof saw Monkeys take the lead (18:33 to go in the 1st half). This was followed by continuous pressure by Monkeys, which resulted in James Kristof slamming the ball in to the goal post, the ball rebounded straight back to him, and on the second attempt, found the back of the net (9:40 to go in the 1st half). 2-0 Monkey Magic at half time. Allsorts realising the desperation needed to stay in the competiton, tightened their performance in the second half. Monkeys, playing the smart game, realised that if they don't get scored against the can't lose, made sure of their defense. This resulted in a stalemate for most the second half. Allsorts eventually getting some late chances, but Mark Kim on two occasions had a half net opening but decided to hit the ball straight to the goalie. Final score 2-0 Monkey Magic. Monkey Magic now play Icebergs for the remaining C-grade final spot. Meanwhile Allsorts have been eliminated from the C grade finals.
Slush Puppies Vs. Flaming Tomatos ( D Elimination Final 7 Vs. 8)
Slush Puppies with only four players, and Flaming Tomatos desperate to get their first competition win, decided to make a game of it. It turned out to be a very even first half, both teams creating opportunities, but neither able to convert. In the second half, it seemed Flaming Tomatos realised that with a two player advantage over the seventh placed team, that a victory was either now or never. Soon enough this energy was turned in to a goal, Tim Boyce finishing off a move originated by Nikki Pearce going via Andrew Chapman (18:39 remaining in the 2nd). A loud chear went up!!!! Shortly after, Flaming Tomatos struck again, Andrew Chapman assisted by Tim Boyce (15:30 remaining in the 2nd). From then on it was a case of trying to share the wealth. This eventually was succesful. Luke Roffey scoring with some nice decoy work by Nikki Pearce (4:42 remaining in the 2nd). Jason Solomon then got in on the action being assisted by Darren Pearce (1:15 remaining in the 2nd). This produced a final score of 4-0 Flaming Tomatos. Flaming Tomatos now go on to play Steelers who forfeited against 69ers in the D grade qualifying final. The winner goes on to play 69ers in the D grade final.

The last 50 Game Member for the A Division Season: Angela Nasr
Angela Nasr celebrated her 50th game in style setting up Saxon Hooper to score his 100th A division point and helping secure the minor premiership for her team ThunderBirds. Angela becomes the 13th member of the A division 50 game club. She has won 1 premiership with ThunderBirds and is looking for a second this season. Angela represented NSW at the 2001 nationals here in Sydney.

02-DEC-2002
Division A - Week 18
Thunderbirds Vs. Wild Buffaloes
Wild Buffaloes needed the win and then hope Slytherin could knock off Sky Devils in the next game to make the finals. Thunderbirds on the other hand needed just a single point from the game to ensure them the minor premiership. The game started at a frantic pace with both teams running flat out up and down the ice. Didnt take long for the first goal with Angela Nasr breaking over halfway and laying it off perfectly for Saxon Hooper to score his 100th A grade point and Thunderbirds first goal. The game then settled into a rhythm (a very fast one) as neither team could crack the other, ThunderBirds going to the break 1-0 up with one hand on the minor premiership. Wild Buffaloes came out hard in the second and came close to equalising on a number of occasions. At the other end some good defence by Gemma Fornal and Christene Deng of Wild Buffaloes turned some dangerous attacks back and kept the Buffaloes in the game. Unfortunately for Buffaloes a Saxon Hooper break away and shot got past the keeper and made it 2-0 with seven to play. Not giving up the Wild Buffaloes threw everything at ThunderBirds but they weathered the storm taking the minor premiership and relegating Buffaloes to 5th. Final Score 2-0 Thunderbirds. Thunderbirds now take on Sawawawas in the Qualifying Final next week.
Sky Devils Vs. Slytherin
With Wild Buffaloes out, the pressure for this game went out the window.. However it turned out to be a match of significance as these two teams are going to sqaure off again next week in the A division Elimination Final. Steve Timmins for Slytherin started the scoreing driving a long shot past the keeper. Sky Devils wasted no time hitting back with Tracy Ivin driving the ball into the goal mouth for Con Sourlangos to centre the ball for Shannon Jorda to one time it into the back of the net. Sky Devils werent finished this half with Tracy Ivin again laying it off to Con Sourlangos who completed a couple of one twos with Andrew Nicholson before flipping one between the keepers legs for a 2-1 halftime lead. Into the second half, Sky Devils third and final goal came more from good luck than any real skill. As the ball looked to be cleared from Slytherins defensive half Tracy Ivin trapped and poked it to John Skiadas who slid it accross to Con Sourlangos who looked to dump it into the goal mouth with a looping slap shot. There were no Sky Devils at the post and the keeper had it covered until Ryan Findlayson through up his stick and from above shoulder height neatly deflected it past the keeper. Final score 3-1 Sky Devils giving them third spot. So in a replay Sky Devils take on Slytherin in the A division Elimination final.

02-DEC-2002
Division B - Week 18
Polar Bears Vs. Golden Falcons
Nothing much riding on this game except for the mens B division points award. Polar Bear's Mark Kim on 16 points and Sean Mitchell on 15. Adding spice to the game most the Polar Bears are off to Adeliade to watch a 10 minute solar eclipse so they bought up C graders Danny Santamaria and Brendon Nigro. Polar Bear new comers did well and Polar Bears controlled the game to win 3-1 with Mark Kim doing enough to win the B division points award. Goals to Tracy Ivin, Mark Kim and Danny Santamaria on his B grade debut. Polar Bears take the minor premiership and play Phoenix in the B division Qualifying final next week.
Guinness Vs. Ice Fury
Not much to play for, for either team in this game with Guinness firmly entrenched in third and Ice Fury unable to top 4th placed Western Scorpions. That didnt seem to mean much to either side as they battled hard anyway. Guinness scored first through David Daffy from Dane Hansen. Ice Fury hit back with Craig Loughlin-Smith from a John Skiadas pass. Ice Fury were unlucky not to pinch a win in the last few seconds as the ball bobbled around the Guinness goal crease. Final score 1-1. Guinness will now take on Western Scorpions in next weeks B division Qualifying final.
Western Scorpions Vs. Phoenix
Coming off a 9-2 thrashing of Golden Falcons, the Western Scorpions are hitting form at the right time of the year. Phoenix minus solid defenders Cliff and Mandy Pace struggled to contain the fast and fleeting Scorpion attack. In the end Western Scorpions got up 3-1 sending warnings to the top three teams in the process. Goals for Scorpions went to Steve Larter, Alex Blair and Brett Mitchell. The lone goal scorer for Phoenix was Stephen Clarke.

28-NOV-2002
Division C - Week 18
Slush Puppies Vs. Steelers
Steelers with a player short yet again, once again showed they don't need a full team to be a dominant force. In the first half Justin Bullen claimed a hat trick for the Steelers, while the only reply from the Slush Puppies came from a break away Dirk Wheelan goal. In the second half, Kieran Knowles decided he wanted in on the action, joining the "hat trick in a half" club. This combined with some stylish epileptic goal keeping by Todd Bullen saw the final score at 6-1 Steelers.
Allsorts Vs. Icebergs
Allsorts realising how important it was for them not to loose against the second place Icebergs, concentrated their efforts on some solid defense. This proved to be effective in frustrating the Icebergs attack. But even this wasn't good enough to keep out the Icebergs. A keeping error by Mark Kim left Craig Loughlin-Smith only needing to push the ball towards the open goals, but decided to take a wind up and miss hit on the follow through, giving the Allsorts defense a chance to play at the ball, and fumble it into the still open goals. 1-0 Icebergs with only a couple of minutes remaining. Allsorts then went into attack mode, but it seemed they couldn't break through until Mark Kim made a pass from behind the goals to the front of the goal crease where Danny Santamaria somehow deflected the ball off his legs, onto his stick and into the goal with 5 seconds to spare. Final score 1-1 and with Steelers failing to provide players for duty, Allsorts sneak into the finals on countback after finishing equal on 18 points with Steelers.
Flaming Tomatos Vs. Can Openers
The last time these two teams met, a white wash to the Can Openers was predicted, but 1-0 was the result. Yet again the top of the table Can Openers were odds on to take the match comfortably against the last placed Flaming Tomatos. Can Openers claimed the lead halfway through the first half with a fumbling lead up to an Aaron Calfas goal. Good scrambling defense by the Flaming Tomatos saw Can Openers held out for the remainder of the match. But the best defensive team Can Openers were not about to let in the bottom attacking team Flaming Tomatos. Final score 1-0 Can Openers. Can Openers conceded just 6 goals in their 14 matches.
Monkey Magic Vs. 69ers
69ers unable to make the finals, and Monkey Magic guaranteed to finish in third spot, gave the right mixture for a good spirited and entertaining match. 69ers, only with five players, took the lead in the first half with Steve Larter scoring off a Jay Schmidt assist. Realising they shouldn't be behind, Monkey Magic came out in the second half firing. Eventually breaking through with a goal to Bryan Macklin assisted by Sara Kristof. They then went back into coast mode. Soon enough 69ers struck again, Tim Edwards hammering one home. Monkeys did create a chance at the death of the game, Tim Roffey putting a floating ball in the back of the net, only to be called for high sticking. Final Score 2-1 69ers.

27-NOV-2002
Jo Mitchell the first player to play in 50 B Division Games
Finally a player has made it to 50 games in B division. Jo has played in all four B division tournaments for Guinness. She is 18th (out of 121 all time players) in the all time B division points list with 15 points and 4th out of the female players. Jo has also represented NSW in the 2001 and 2002 Australian National Championships. She has now also played 24 games in A division for Slytherin.

25-NOV-2002
Division A - Week 17
Thunderbirds Vs. Sky Devils
With Sky Devils still walking the finals tight rope a win vs top placed Thunderbirds was a must. 0-0 all at half time ensuring an exciting finish. Kerry Baxter with the first goal for Sky Devils giving the edge in the must win game. It was Saxon Hooper who fired a goal past defenders and keeper to even it up with only minutes to go. 1-1 full time and into a crucial overtime. Mainly end to end stuff until Con Sourlangos threaded one from out wide with only seconds remaining. The bonus point going the way of Sky Devils.
Mighty Ducks Vs. Sawawawas
Sawawawas need the win to ensure their finals position. Mighty Ducks playing for some pride came out hard and really took it to Sawawawas. A Peter Yabsley goal the only difference between the teams. 1-0 Sawawawas. Sawawawas have now ensured a finals spot and can finish anywhere from 1st to 3rd depending on results of the final two games.
Slytherin Vs. Wild Buffaloes
With both teams equal on points it was a crucial must win game for both teams. Craig Horsley was first to score for Slytherin being johnny on the spot in front of the net to take the lead. Wild Buffaloes were never out of it with attacking raid after attacking raid but just couldnt find the net. Stephen Timmins finished off the Buffaloes with another goal (should have been scored by Sara Kristof .. but she just missed the open net.. Stephen scored off the ensuring goal mouth scramble). Buffaloes now slip to 5th place 2 points behind both Slytherin and Sky Devils and need to beat Thunderbirds next week to have any hope of making the finals. Is going to be a very tight finish to the A grade season.

25-NOV-2002
Division B - Week 17
Polar Bears Vs. Phoenix
A strange game between the top of the table B teams. Phoenix seemed content to camp in their defensive end and repeatedly hit the ball back to the Polar Bears. Polar Bears moved the ball round well but couldnt crack the defense. Phoenix's Ben Robson grabbed an intercept at half way and slotted home a nice goal to give his team the win and top spot on the table. These teams will square off again in two weeks for the first qualifying final.. should be another good game.
Western Scorpions Vs. Golden Falcons
This game was quite unbelievable to watch. I think the drug test results need to be checked before I can give the official result Simply outstanding team play by the Western Scorpions who scored 9 goals to 2 as the demolished the Golden Falcons chances of making the finals. Western Scorpions Tim Edwards finished with 6 goals, Jay Schmidt 2 and Alex Blair 1. There was also a heap of assists to back this up, an awesome display of team work. For Golden Falcons it was Tim Brown and Sean Mitchell who scored the goals.

21-NOV-2002
Division C - Week 17
69ers Vs. Steelers
For the first time in a long time, steelers had a full team present. Every time the've had a full team this season, I believe they've gone on to victory. This time it was a comfortable victory of 6-1. Justin Bullen completing the tripple double (2 goals, 2 assists, 2 (4 minutes) penalties). 69ers did create a few almost certain goals, but lack of early decision making proved to be the down fall. With one game remaining 69ers can't make the C-Grade finals, but Steelers will have to win their last game to give them a chance to steal fourth spot.
Monkey Magic Vs. Slush Puppies
A very tight game with no score in the first half. Monkey Magic eventually breaking the deadlock through Rowan Braham off of a Daniel Wong assist. Slush Puppies quickly replied through a goal to Patrina Wormleaton. This was followed up by some more tight tussling between the two teams until again Monkey Magic broke the deadlock, this time the goal to Bryan Macklin, and assist to Rowan Braham. Monkeys then went deep in defense to protect their lead, and Slush Puppies went to all out attack. A bit of skill combined with luck held them out. Final Score 2-1 Monkey Magic. Monkeys will finish in third place, and Slush Puppies need to win their last game to give them a chance to slush into fourth spot.
Allsorts Vs. Can Openers
Always going to be a good game, with Can Openers looking to hold on to first spot and Allsorts trying to make the final four. Neither team dominated, and the Can Openers two always back tactic as always was difficult to get through. Can Openers did break the deadlock halfway through the first half Andrew Leahy finding himself open in front of goals after some casual defence by Mark Kim. Allsorts left with the task of scoring against the best defensive team to get back in the game, but they couldn't quite manage it. Final score 1-0 Can Openers. Can Openers take on the bottom of the table Flaming Tomatos to secure first place. Meanwhile, Allsorts may have to rely on other results to "sort" of claim fourth spot, taking on the second place Icebergs in their final match.

18-NOV-2002
Division A - Week 16
Thunderbirds Vs. Sawawawas
Sawawawas got out to a flyer, winning the face off then moving the ball nicely to score a goal to Peter Yabsley from Sam Boer in the opening minute. Thunderbirds never really got into this game with Sawawawas controlling possession and field position. Peter Yabsley scored the next goal from the penalty spot as he was brought down from behind by Troy Carroll. 2 - 0 to Sawawawas in the end giving them a 3 win sweep of the series vs Thunderbirds (1st two games were won in OT).
Sky Devils Vs. Mighty Ducks
A must win game for both teams played in good spirits. First half was very even and the score was locked at 0-0. In the second half it became a bit more end to end. Harry Sotiropoulos fired off a couple heat seeking missiles at keeper Peter Yabsley. Both of them curled, jumped, slided, floated, dipped and were ell and truly on target only to be saved on the line by Pete's size 13 boot (which was attahed to his diving leg). However it was Sky Devils that got all the goals though devious deflections in front of the net. John Skiadas, Kerry Baxter and then Con Sourlangos (who also had 2 assists) scored in the 3-0 win for Sky Devils. The win puts them in the top 4 for the first time this season.

Division B - Week 16
Guinness Vs. Western Scorpions
A very even game with no score in the end. Any sort of draw would have been a fair result as both teams created and deflected many chances. The series is tied at 1 win, 1 loss and 1 draw.
Phoenix Vs. Golden Falcons
Golden Falcons started the scoreing Sean Mitchell somehow slotting one from the side to give them a 1 nil lead. Matt Robson then evened it up as both teams played hard to secure their finals positions. In the end it was a Stephen Clarke goal that decided the match and got the win for Phoenix. The result handing Phoenix 3 wins by a single goal over Golden Falcons.
Polar Bears Vs. Ice Fury
With Scorpions drawing and Falcons losing it was a good chance for Ice Fury to grab a win over the exam stressed Polar Bears and put themselves into a finals position. However it was not to be as Mark Kim discovered he can pass and set up two goals. One each for Eric Fry and Tracy Ivin. Kerry Baxter picked up the other goal for Polar Bears. John Skiadas was the loan scorer for the Fury !

14-NOV-2002
Division C - Week 16
Flaming Tomatos Vs. Slush Puppies
Flaming Tomatos, dare I say it, dominated the first half. Having more possesion, more chances, and more desperation. They were unlucky on severall occasions not to take the lead. In the second half, Slush Puppies came out firing getting two quick goals (James Ward and Mitchell Tuza). Then it went back to the Flaming Tomatos dominating possesion and field position. Despite about ten excellent chances in the half, they couldn't put a goal on the board. 2-0 Slush Puppies.
Monkey Magic Vs. Can Openers
Monkey Magic with an outside chance of finishing second in front of Can Openers after the rounds, meant this was a fairly important match. Both teams controlled in their own way in periods through the match. It was Can Openers who came through the better. Monkey Magic couldn't find a way through the constant two well back in defense technique by the Can Openers. Meanwhile, Can Openers were able to beat Monkeys on three occassions. 3-0 Can Openers. Can Openers have now secured a top 2 finish.
69ers Vs. Allsorts
A new tactic employed by Brendan Nigro for the Allsorts called "Steal the ball from your own team mates" didn't seem to do the trick against 69ers. With the likes of Tim Edwards, and Mark Kim on the ice, it was always going to be a fast game, and a bench full of subs should have given the Allsorts the edge. 69ers eventually slotted away 2 goals (Bryan Macklin and Steve Larter) to take the game 2-0.

Not Cancelled just postponed.. The toughman event was scheduled to be run on the 26/27th of October 11pm -> 7am Sunday morning. However this is the daylight saving change over and we would have lost an hour of the tournament when the clocks ticks forward from 2-3am. So therefore we will have to move it into November.. likely dates 16/17th so keep it free.

Big Kosta Sourlas Plays His 50th A Grade Game
Another Mighty Duck joins the 50 game club for A division. Although his team didnt win (should have) Kosta celebrated with a fine goal and a strong game. Kosta was heading the all time penalty minutes list until over taken by Terry Giovas and has scored 29 points with 20 goals and 9 assists and is in the top ten points scorers all time for A division. He was also part of the Yellow team which won the inaugral broomball competition at Blackton in 1998 and has also won a premiership at Penrith with ThunderBirds.

11-NOV-2002
Division A - Week 15
Slytherin Vs. Sawawawas
On wetish ice 2nd vs 3rd and it turned out to be a finals like match. Slytherin began better controlling possession and probing for gaps in the Sawawawas defence. Eventually finding one Steve Timmins buried the shot but the goal was disallowed as Brett Mitchell was in the goal keepers crease and Beth Hines had unintentionally passed the ball with her hand. Despite the early pressure Sawawawas settled and started top mount much of their own pressure in the second half. Peter yabsley scoreing the winner and only goal of the match from a Ben Eagleston pass. 1 nil Sawawawas. However Slytherin hold a 2 wins to 1 over Sawawawas should they end up equal on points (which they currently are).
Sky Devils Vs. Wild Buffaloes
Must win game for Sky Devils who have shown a good reversal of form of late and pushing hard for 4th spot. Sky Devils opened the scoreing but that is never enough against the very persistant Wild Buffaloes who came back to score the next two goals and lead 2-1 with only 4 minutes to go. Some patient lead up work saw the ball at George Piniros's feet and he fired home the equaliser sending this game into overtime. Wild Buffaloes in attack turned the ball over to John Skiadas who marched the ball up from defence and slotted home the golden goal for Sky Devils. Goals to Tim Brown and Scott Murray for Wild Buffaloes with Shannon Jorda scoreing the other goal for Sky Devils. Sky Devils and Wild Buffaloes are all squared away with 1 win, 1 loss and a draw between them and on equal for and against records. If they are equal on points at the end of the season then we will have to see how they fared against the top team to split them.
ThunderBirds Vs. Mighty Ducks
Might Ducks down one Harry Sotiropoulos and ThunderBirds down Troy Carroll (who decided the movie premier of The Ring wasd more important.. something about that title that must appeal to him) and James Ray meant this game could have gone either way. In the end it probably went the wrong way as Mighty Ducks had countless more chances to score. ThunderBirds took an early lead before big (and hairy) Kosta Sourlas created a new move where he kicked the ball past the keeper and then collected the rebound off the goal post before slotting the ball in off the stick. Both teams then squandered some good chances but were denied.. usally by good keeping. ThunderBirds scored the winner with 5 minutes to go but were lucky to hold on as Mighty Ducks hammered the goals but couldnt convert. Arthur Papageorgiov unlucky not score with a shot in the last 10 seconds. The win gives ThunderBirds a 2 wins 1 loss series record vs Mighty Ducks.

11-NOV-2002
Division B - Week 15
Polar Bears Vs. Guinness
1st vs 3rd with Guinness needing a win to keep in touch with Polar Bears and Phoenix and also to keep at bay the fast finishing Falcons, Scorpions and Fury !! A very even game with two telling strikes from new Guinness recruit James Kristoff the difference between the two teams. 2 nil to Guinness. The win leaves both teams equal on 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss however Guinness have a positive goal difference and would go ahead in the event of tied competition points.
Golden Falcons Vs. Ice Fury
A must win game for both teams if they are to make the finals. Shannon Jorda scored first for the Fury with a fine break away goal. However Golden Falcons hit back soon after with a goal to Sean Mitchell (who closes in on Mark Kim as B points leader) Then late in the game Angela Nasr scored the winner with her first B grade goal using her new Shooter stick (you can buy these from me.. only $225). Golden Falcons mounted many a raid but couldnt equalise. The win moves Ice Fury from last to 4th and in with a real chance of playing finals broomball. However the series is squared off at 1 win, 1 loss and 1 draw with Golden Falcons having the edge on goal difference thanx to a 5-0 win over the Fury in round 3.

07-NOV-2002
Division C - Week 15
Icebergs Vs. 69ers
69ers, again with a girl short (not entirely there own fault), were always going to struggle against the top of the table Icebergs. ' However they never looked out of it, creating many many attacking chances, good keeping and defence holding them out. Icebergs, with superior team work, and player advantage had to score, and did so 4 times the highlight being a goal seeking missile from about halfway launched by Belinda McDavitt, the ball seemed to think on its own as it swereved around both defence, attack and finally the keeper. 4-0 Icebergs.
Can Openers Vs. Steelers
Steelers with only four players on this occassion, made it easy for the can openers to camp two people back in defence, and still have enough numbers to cause trouble upfront. To add to the Steelers disadvantage, Todd Bullen was continually having trouble keeping his pants on????? Steelers were down to three men on two occassions, but Can Openers failed to score in both of these situations. They did however mange to score five goals, Rob Courtney featuring in most of them. 5-0 Can Openers.
Monkey Magic Vs. Flaming Tomatos
Monkey Magic seemed to take the win for granted in the first ten minutes, and were almost punished on several occasions. Eventually they did get there act together scoring three in the remainder of the first half, and another three in the second, slowing down towards the end of the match. Bryan Macklin completing the tripple double (2 goals, 2 assists, 2 penalties). 6-0 Monkey Magic.

04-NOV-2002
Division A - Week 14
Slytherin Vs. Mighty Ducks
For the third time this season Mighty Ducks took the lead over Slytherin when a Steve Timmins error in defence was punished by Arthur Papageorgiov. The game then evened out as both teams tried to dominate using slightly questionable tactics and niggle began to creep in however to no result on the scoreboard. 1 nil at half time to Mighty Ducks. The second half was again even and again niggly however it was Ryan Findlaydson with his brand new STX Gold Crown who got the break away and with a neat hand to stick move (commonly referred to as the Saxon.. and somehow in C grade as the Mark !!) scored the equaliser for Slytherin. Neither team managed the winner which meant this nasty little game was going into OT. OT started with Mighty Ducks pressing however a turnover and an outlet pass saw Steve Timmins bury the winner for Slytherin. Slytherin swept Mighty Ducks winning all three encounters this season.
Sawawawas Vs. Wild Buffaloes
A good game with end to end action. Sawawawas and Wild Buffaloes always looking likely to score with attacking raid after attacking raid. However both teams defence held out with the 1 all deadlock being broken by Tim Brown with only two minutes left on the clock. Sawawawas had some late chances but Wild Buffaloes stopped them all and gained a much needed settling win. Wild Buffaloes take a 2 wins to 1 lead over Sawawawas should they finish equal on competition points.

04-NOV-2002
Division B - Week 14
Phoenix Vs. Ice Fury
Another must win game for Ice Fury up against second place Phoenix. Ice Fury started the better camping their offence in the Phoenix half however they couldnt convert and Phoenix hit back with a goal. From there Phoenix never lost the lead and ended up winning 3-1. Two goals to Matt Robson and one to Andrew Chapman. Stephen Clarke had a strong game up forward unlucky not to have a couple of goals. Craig Loughlin-Smith was the scorer for Ice Fury. Phoenix take the series with 2 wins and a draw vs Ice Fury.
Polar Bears Vs. Western Scorpions
Western Scorpions in their black and yellow strip took on the in form Polar Bears in a tight finals like game. Both teams worked possession well and set up some good chances but it was Polar Bears who converted their chances taking the game 2 nil. Goals to Mark Kim and and Andrew Leahy.. both set up with excellent lead up work. Polar Bears clean sweep 3 wins over Western Scorpions.
Guinness Vs. Golden Falcons
Must win game for both teams and played that way. In the end nothing separated the teams as they drew 2-2. Goals for Guinness by Ryan Findlayson and Craig Horsley. For Golden Falcons it was Sean Mitchell and Mark Slater. Both teams are on 1 win, 1 loss and 1 draw.. but in the event of tied points Guinnes will progress as they have a goal difference of positive 1 vs Golden Falcons.

31-OCT-2002
Division C - Week 14
Icebergs Vs. Slush Puppies
Entering the business end of the season, Icebergs need to keep winning to stay infront of the Can Openers. In this game they showed their capabilities as an entire team unit. They controlled most of the match, Slush Puppies only chances came from break aways, and even they were shut down fairly quickly. Icebergs went on to win 4-0, it could have been more if it wasn't for some classy keeping by Steve Neill and some defensive tenacity from Nadia Lunam and Cassey Morely for the Slush Puppies. To go with 4 goals that were scored, there was 7 assists!!!! Well done Icebergs.
Monkey Magic Vs. Steelers
Steelers yet again showed the fight that have in them, regardless who fills in for them. Monkeys got off to a good start, getting the opener through the Kristof's, James scoring and Sara assisting early in the first half. It didn't take Steelers long to strike back, Justin Bullen passing to a centered Craig Loughlin-Smith (the fill in), who powered a goal home. For the remainder of the half, great mark up defence from both teams stopped the score changing. Almost from the face off to start the second half, James Kristof found himself with a clear shot at the keeper, and after regain two rebounds off his own shots, eventually put it home to give Monkeys the lead for the second time. For the remainder of the match, the Steelers stepped up a gear and kept Monkeys under siege. But good defence, keeping and a little luck, kept the ball out of their net. Final Score 2-1 Monkey Magic.
Allsorts Vs. Flaming Tomatos
"Mark! Get back in goals!!" seemed to be the war cry for this match. Allsorts often using their speed to create chances, and shut down Flaming Tomatos chances. The final score was 5-0 Allsorts, but could have been more... Brendan Nigro missing the open goals from point blank range. A positive note for the Flaming Tomatos was Nikki Pearce's new found ball control, beating severall people throughout the match, including beating Mark Kim!!

28-OCT-2002
Division A - Week 13
Wild Buffaloes Vs. Mighty Ducks
John Magnisalis opened the scoreing for Mighty Ducks with a well worked move originating with Kosta Sourlas at half way. The game then ebbed and flowed as both teams used their pace to counter attack creating chances left, right and centre. Wild Buffaloes were next to score through Matt Robson from a Tim Brown pass tieing it up at 1-1 which was the half time score. Much of the same in the second half with each team creating and being foiled by the defence until a pass from Gemma Fornal to Tim Brown set up the winner for the Buffaloes. Final score 2-1. The win gives Wild Buffaloes a 2 win 1 loss record vs Mighty Ducks meaning in the event of a tie in points with Mighty Ducks and Wild Buffaloes at the end of the season Wild Buffaloes will move ahead.
Slytherin Vs. ThunderBirds
Thunderbirds needed to win to maintain top spot.. Slytherin to regain it.. set up to be a classic stuggle. Slytherin started well maintaining possession and field position however it was Thunderbirds to score first through a goal mouth scramble with Saxon Hooper knocking it in. Again Slytherin composed themselves and controlled midfield possession but again it was Thunderbirds next to score with a nice three pass move for Aaron Wigg to bury it from the post spot. In an almost identical move James Ray scored from the post position to make it 3-0 at half time for Thunderbirds. A long way back for Slytherin but in true Slytherin fashion they came out hard for the second half. Thunderbirds were able to hold on and scored a late goal to make it 4-0. The win gives Thunderbirds a 2 win 1 loss record vs Slytherin.
Sky Devils Vs. Sawawawas
An awesome game with both teams showing patient offence and solid defence. A tight first half saw no scorers and set up the game for a close finish. Just when it looked like it was going to be a nil all draw a Kerry Baxter shot was defelected unluckily by the Sawawawas defence past the keeper giving Sky Devils a much needed win. The win gives Sky Devils a 2 loss 1 win record vs Sawawawas meanining Sawawawas will progress in the event of a tie.

28-OCT-2002
Terry Giovas the Latest to Play 50 A Division Games
Another member to the illustrious 50 game club for A division. Terry started way back in the dark old days of Blacktown and has barely missed a game. He is the 11th member and currently plays for Mighty Ducks. Terry has 17 goals and 7 assists and leads the all time penalty minute count for A division with 23 minutes.

28-OCT-2002
Division B - Week 13
Ice Fury Vs. Western Scorpions
Fourth vs Last in a crucial game for both teams. A win for Scorpions securing 4th spot. A must win game for Ice Fury if they were to scramble off the bottom and into the top four. Western Scorpions started the stronger with shot after shot repelled by keeper George Piniros. However the lack of conversion came back to bite the Scorpions and Ice Fury piled on three goals, two to Shannon Jorda and one to John Skiadas. The Scorpions hit back late with a goal to Tim Edwards but as time ran out John Skiadas completed his double and the 4-1 win for Ice Fury. The win gives Ice Fury a 2 win 1 loss record vs Western Scorpions which will be crucial in the final wash up as the bottom 3 teams battle for fourth spot.
Guinness Vs. Phoenix
These teams are finals bound and very evenly matched. Phoenix scored first with a break away goal to Andrew Chapman combining with Stephen Clarke. This was the last score of the game with Phoenix getting home 1-0. Teams started with a draw, Guiness won their second encounter 1-0 and now Phoenix win 1-0 leaving them all equal on 1 win 1 loss and a draw.

24-OCT-2002
Division C - Week 13
Icebergs Vs. Flaming Tomatos
The Flaming Tomatos started the match short handed with only 5 players and managed to go ahead in the fourth minute when a sliding tangle of players(something akin to a game of twister) bundled the ball into the net. The goal awarded to Tim Boyce. It was one nil at half time. In the second half 3 goals to Icebergs sealed victory. One each to Adrian White, Belinda McDavitt and Craig Loughlin-Smith.
69ers Vs. Can Openers
The second game of the night where a team started shorthanded, 69ers with only 5 on the ice. Neil Armstrong siezed the oportunity for Can Openers and scored the only goal of the game.
Slush Puppies Vs. Allsorts
A solid performance by the Allsorts saw them victorious over the Slush Puppies. Paul Jarrett opened the scoring with a shot from the blue line that managed to squirm under the keepers foot. Mark Kim scoring another to ensure Slush Puppies couldn't steal a point.

21-OCT-2002
Division A - Week 12
Slytherin Vs. Sky Devils
The final week of round two.. only five games left for all teams and desparation time for Sky Devils. On their side experience.. Five players of the ten 50 game club members (including newest member Con Sourlas) in their team, they controlled possession and left Slytherin scrambling on the wet ice. However even with the lack of possession Slytherin defended well and held Sky Devils out. Nil all at half time. Sky Devils took the lead through a nice goal to John Skiadas and never let Slytherin in. Final score 1 nil Sky Devils. Of Slytherin's three losses two have been to Sky Devils. The loss sees Slytherin slide into third spot below Sawawawas.
Wild Buffaloes Vs. ThunderBirds
To grab top spot Thunderbirds needed to beat Wild Buffaloes and have Sky Devils defeat Slytherin. Half the equation was fulfilled and the scene was set. ThunderBirds were first to score when Troy Carroll won a face off back to Saxon Hooper who scored. Tim Brown then stepped it up a gear and seized a lose ball in attack and on the second attempt flicked it past the keeper. One all at half time.. Both teams really gave it their all in the second half but it was Troy Carroll in rare (I mean really rare) goal scoreing form who scored the second and winning goal for Thunderbirds. Final score 2-1 Thunderbirds giving ThunderBirds top spot for the first time this season. Wild Buffaloes remain in 4th with Mighty Ducks and Sky Devils breathing down their neck.

21-OCT-2002
50 game club welcomes Con Sourlas
Con Soulas now a Sky Devil becomes the tenth A grade player to join the 50 game club. Good stuff Con.. keep it up !!

21-OCT-2002
Division B - Week 12
Phoenix Vs. Western Scorpions
Also the final games of round two in B division and the competition is hot. Phoenix in second playing fourth placed Western Scorpions both teams needing to win to secure their finals spot. However neither team could convert their chances either from good keeping, good defence or wayward shooting. Final score nil all. Both teams retain their spot, second and fourth respectively.
Guinness Vs. Ice Fury
Guiness only two points clear of Western Scorpions in third also needed a win against bottom of the ladder Ice Fury. Last time these teams met Ice Fury went down 7 goals to 1. This time however they muscled up and while under siege for most of the game held the full force of Guinness out for 40 minutes and gained a nil all draw. While not out of the finals race, Ice Fury will have to win the bulk of their final five games if they want to taste finals broomball.
Golden Falcons Vs. Polar Bears
Polar Bears out in front needed a win to secure top place. Golden Falcons in fifth spot needed a win to put them in the top four. A very fast paced game with Polar Bears controlling possession but then having to defend desparately as Golden Falcons won a turn over. After awhile it looked like this game was headed for the third 0-0 draw of the night until Tracy Ivin finished off some good lead up work giving Polar Bear a 1-0 lead. Early in the second half Polar Bears again struck taking their lead to two through Mark Kim. This seemed to spark Golden Falcons and all the pressure was turned back onto the Bears as the Falcons pushed hard. Eventually the pressure paid off as Larni Haycock drove a ball into the centre which was neatly redirected by Sean Mitchell making the score 2-1. With only 4 seconds to go Golden Falcons nearly got the equaliser but the shot bounced off the keeper and rolled along the goal line before squirting out off the pole. Final score 2-1 Polar Bears secureing first spot on 20 points three points clear of Phoeinx and five points clear of third place Guinness.

17-OCT-2002
Division C - Week 12
69ers Vs. Flaming Tomatos
69ers were a girl down for the whole match, but they were determined to stop Flaming Tomatos from getting their first win. After early trades, 69ers took the lead through Jay Schmidt. Flaming Tomatos with the one person advantage, did create some attacking chances, but Karen Callaghan once again showed her expertise in the goalkeeper position, making sure of the shut out. 69ers went on to score five more goals taking the final score to 6-0 69ers.
Icebergs Vs. Monkey Magic
What a game this was setup to be. Top of the table Icebergs against third placed and very much in form Monkey Magic. The game lived up to expectations, producing a match worthy of a grand final. Both teams fought hard for the ball, scrambled well in defence, and were eager to give support in attack. Monkey Magic scored first with James Kristof putting home a cross from Bryan Macklin. But Icebergs were never out of it, and eventually returned the favour with Aaron Walsh slotting a Garry Mitchell cross. An even amount of chances were created for the teams, but outstanding keeping by Garry Mitchell for Icebergs and Aaron Toomey for Monkey Magic, saw the score finish 1-1. This is quite possibly the matchup that will appear in the grand final.
Steelers Vs. Allsorts
Steelers again short on numbers had a ring in, but she did them no favours by getting a 2 minute penalty early in the match. Despite this, Steelers were first to score through an individual effort by Kieran Knowles. Allsorts quickly responding, Mark Kim picking a small gap between keeper and post with a little flick shot. The game was fairly fast paced, but neither team could finish off chances created. Final score 1-1.

14-OCT-2002
Division A - Week 11
Slytherin Vs. Wild Buffaloes
Tim Brown started the scoreing for Wild Buffaloes in what turned out to be an action packed game. Slytherin however fought back with a goal to Steve Timmins tieing it up. Both teams then traded penalties and power plays before a few neat passes lead to Jo Mitchell roofing her first ever A division goal. The goal was also enough to win the game for Slytherin who sit atop the A division table.
Sawawawas Vs. Mighty Ducks
This was a cracker of a game with both teams streaming back and forth down the ice. Sawawawas got away to a 2-0 lead though Sam Boer and then Peter Yabsley. However unlike Mighty Ducks of the past the Ducks tightened up and applied a heap of pressure. John Magnisalis getiing one back. Somehow Sawawawas kept the Ducks out and finished the game with a 2-1 win. The win places Sawawawas in equal 1st on points and goal difference with Slytherin however Slytherin have a game in hand vs Sky Devils next week.
Sky Devils Vs. ThunderBirds
Both teams short players in the graveyard match of the night meant fatigue was going to play a part in this game. Troy Carroll fluked a couple of early goals for Thunderbirds on the back of some suspect keeping. Sky Devils recovered and began to dominate posession and worked their way back into the game scoreing the next two goals through Con Sourlangos and Con 'Traitor' Sourlas to tie it up. Then with time running out Troy Carroll grabbed a blocked shot and ran the length of the ice and fired home the winner for Thunderbirds with 39 mintes and 59.5 seconds on the clock. Final Score 3-2 Thunderbirds.

Well done Shannon !

14-OCT-2002
Division B - Week 11
Golden Falcons Vs. Western Scorpions
A tough game as both teams are one of three teams fighting for 3rd and 4th spot on the B division table. Goals to Garry Micthell and Steve Larter for Western Scorpions while Mark Slater scored both goals for the Falcons. In the end Falcons did well to hang on has the faster Scorpions finished over the top of the tireing Falcons. Final score 2-2.
Phoenix Vs. Polar Bears
Both teams squared off for this cracker game. 1st vs 2nd both on equal points. The prize for the win was outright top spot on the B division table. Polar Bears started on fire with Andrew Leahy smashing home the first two goals, followed closely by Mark Kim. Ten minutes into the game Polar Bears up by 3-0. Good thing for Phoenix was there was 30 minutes to go to claw back into the game. Phoenix did settle and the game ebbed and flowed with both teams creating good chance through the mid field only to have the defence stop it. As time went by Phoenix had to press harder and harder forward leaving themselves vulnerable at the back which Mark Kim took advantage of to increase the Polar Bears lead to 4. Phoenix never managed to score and Polar Bears win 4-0 taking the outright B division lead over Phoenix and Guinness.

10-OCT-2002
Division C - Week 11
Icebergs Vs. Can Openers
In a top of the table clash, it looked like Can Openers belonged at the bottom. Icebergs completely dominated possesion, and created many many opportunities. Meanwhile, Can Openers just couldn't control the ball long enough to set up their attack. Goals to Garry Mitchell, Tim Edwards, and Craig Loughhlin-Smith saw the score to 3-0 Icebergs handing Can Openers their first defeat of the season. Icebergs now lead the comp, edging out Can Openers on goal difference.
Flaming Tomatos Vs. Steelers
After a good showing last match, Flaming Tomatos resorted back to their old "lack of defence" tactics, which was never going to work against the well organised Steelers side. Flaming Tomatos did however create some great goal scoring opportunities, failing to convert on each occassion. Final score was 4-0 Steelers, it could of been worse if it wasn't for some skillfull or lucky (couldn't tell which) goalkeeping.
69ers Vs. Slush Puppies
A five person 69ers side took the field in the first half. It seemed to be a fairly even match up at this, Slush Puppies not heeding advice from Geoff Neill that could have made the difference. Despite this they did manage to put away two scrappy goals to take it into half time at 2-0 Slush Puppies. In the second half 69ers manage to recruit a goal keeper. This gave the 69ers a chance for another attacking player, and this proved to be the difference. 69ers completely dominating the second half and scoring three goals, which was just enough to take the match 3-2 69ers.

07-OCT-2002
Division A - Week 10
Sky Devils Vs. Mighty Ducks
Both teams needed wins to steady their season and Sky Devils lept out the gates with an early goal to Kerry Baxter. Sky Devils continued to exert a lot of pressure but couldnt convert anymore chances. As the Sky Devils tired John Magnisalis used his pace and grabbed a hat trick in his 50th A grade game to secure the much needed win for Mighty Ducks. 3-1.
Sawawawas Vs. Thunderbirds
Thunderbirds scored first with a goal to Saxon Hooper and held out Sawawas until Peter Yabsley levelled the scores at 1-1 with four minutes to go. This sent the game into OT where Sawawawas again through Peter Yabsley scored the golden goal with a minute to go. Thunderbirds squandered some early chances in the pressure cooker that is sudden death overtime. The loss breaks a four game winning streak by Thunderbirds and locks Sawawawas into third spot.

Polar Bears Vs. Ice Fury
A brand new STX laser broom (which you can purchase from me) turned Brock Lesels from the ordinary player he is into a two goal scoreing machine. Another goal by Tracy Ivin handed Polar Bears a convincing 3-1 win over Ice Fury. Ice Fury tried hard but just couldnt convert their opportunities and paid the price. The win has Polar Bears in second place only one duty point behind Phoenix but with a better goal difference. Next weeks game should be a cracker with Phoenix vs Polar Bears deciding which team will ascend to the outright competition lead.
Phoenix Vs. Golden Falcons
A short handed Golden Falcons put up a determined performance and nearly held Phoenix to an improbable draw. However the winner was put away with only a couple minutes to go. John Batman scored for Golden Falcons while Stephen Clarke and Andrew Chapman were the goal scorers for Phoenix. Final score 2-1 Phoenix. Golden Falcons take on Western Scorpions next week in what may prove to be the showdown for the 4th and final finals spot.
Western Scorpions Vs. Guinness
Guinness were suffering jet lag with half their team backing up from the Coffs Harbour tournament and a couple of their girls missing in action. Which meant the fast attacking Western Scorpions were going to make it tough for the tired Guinness team. Brett Mitchell of Western Scorpions was the only scorer of the game and provided his team a much needed win. A shock result which locked Guinnes into third and put Western Scorpions a game behind in 4th.

Division C - Week 10
Slush Puppies Vs. Can Openers
A good flowing game that had many chances created, but great scrambling defence from both teams kept it tight. The only goal to come out of this game was an Andrew Leahy shot that rebounded of the back wall, and Slush Puppies goal keeper Geoff Neill couldn't handle a ball going away from goals, so he quickly fumbled it in. 1-0 Can Openers
Allsorts Vs. Monkey Magic
Allsorts played well while they had the ball, but Monkey Magic had too much desperation in all parts of their game. They ran on to every loose ball, and flooded back in defense when needed. In the end this proved to be a big difference with the final score being 5-0 Monkey Magic. Stars of the game were James Kristof 2G,2A ; Brian Macklin 2G, 1A ; Jo Mitchell 1G ; Tim Roffey 2A. Also worth a mention Aaron Toomey in goals who made a few quality saves.
Icebergs Vs. Steelers
This game probably has left people with a lot of bruises. Heavy shot after heavy shot getting blocked by defenders bodies. In the end it was two high quality "wacks" that eventually got through, one to Tim Edwards, and the other to Aaron Walsh both for Icebergs. A good defensive showing by Sharon Donnelly in only her second game for the Steelers. 2-0 Icebergs.

Division A - Week 9
Thunderbirds Vs. Mighty Ducks
Undefeated in their last three games Thunderbirds were looking to extend their run to four. Starting well with a goal to Troy Carroll and a second goal to Saxon Hooper from an Angela Nasr pass the score was 2-0. Mighty Ducks hit back with a goal in the last minute of the first half to Terry Giovas making the half time score 2-1. The second half was full on pressure by Migty Ducks and they were unlucky on several occasions. Neither team managaged a goal in the second half and Thunderbirds escaped with their fourth win 2-1.
Sky Devils vs Wild Buffaloes
Wild Buffaloes were down on numbers missing at least 4 players and only just having enough to field a team. Sky Devils took advantage of this and controlled possession setting up good offence. Their first goal came from a face off win by Andrew Nicholson who got the ball back to Con Sourlangos to roof his shot giving Sky Devils a 1-0 lead. With only a minute to go Luke Simmonds stole the ball and got it to Tim Brown who managed to weave through and get a shot away and level up the scores and send the game to OT. OT was highlighted by some good defensive work. Firstly Shannon Vost got back to deny Sky Devils and then Tracy Ivin got back to save a shot by Tim Brown. Neither team managed a goal and shared the points. 1 All.
Sawawawas Vs. Slytherin
A freakish game of the highest quality. Both teams keeping the game moving at high pace with a combination of patient offence and swift counter attacks. Steve Timmins was the only goal scorer giving Slythern a 1-0 win and cementing them at top of the ladder.

30-SEP-2002
Division B - Week 9
Golden Falcons Vs. Ice Fury
A dour struggle with both teams unable to break the 0-0 deadlock. Wasted opportunities a plenty for both teams with a draw probably a fair result. Shannon Jorda for Ice Fury and Mark Slater for Golden Falcons the stand out players.
Guinness Vs. Polar Bears
First vs Third in a game which had a finals like atmosphere. Both teams competing for every ball and setting up good opportunities only to be denied. With only a couple of minutes on the clock it looked as though it was going to be the second 0-0 draw of the night for B division. Then Mark Kim seized a loose ball at half way and broke on goals with only the keeper to beat. A nice hard shot into the top of the net secured the win for Polar Bears 1-0. The result reversed the teams positions with Polar Bears moving to first and Guinness dropping to third.

Division C - Week 9 - Round 1 Complete
Flaming Tomatos Vs. Crap Can Openers
A crap performance according to crap Can Opener captain crap Anth Courtney. The only crap goal of the game went to crappy Aaron Calfas who came to the crap game late. While crap Can Openers blamed their crap performance on their crap selves in fact Flaming Tomatos put in their best performance yet, playing with good cohesion. With swarming defence and counter attacks the Tomatos were probably unlucky not to at least tie with the top of the table Crap Can Openers.
Allsorts Vs. Icebergs
This game was all about counter attacks. Both teams making some great break away chances, and it was only some good keeping that kept the score relatively low. Kurt Briggs opened the scoring for Icebergs with a cracking shot, and in the dying stages where Allsorts were all out attack to try and level the scores, Aaron Walsh strolled one into the open net. 2-0 Icebergs.
Slush Puppies Vs. Steelers
Steelers with yet another new line up, still showed some outstanding attacking power. However, it wasn't enough to match it with the speed and experience of the Slush Puppies. Slush Puppies got out to a 3-0 lead in the first half, with goals to Adam O'Callaghan, Dirk Whelan, and Geoff Neill. But Steelers fought back in the second half, grabbing 2 through Ryan Knowles assisted by Chantal Knowles both times. They would have grabbed more if it wasn't for yet another outstanding game in defence by Cassandra Morley. Final score 3-2 Slush Puppies.
Monkey Magic Vs. 69ers
In front of a huge crowd of one, Monkey Magic took on a depleated 69ers side in a very good spirited match. Those who were there were treated to the goal of the season, which started with Jo Mitchell making the initial break, passing to her right to Brian Macklin who kept the ball going right, touching it on to James Kristof. James then passed back to Brian and then collected the return ball and gave a solid pass to the back post for the waiting Jo Mitchell. All of it done without a fumble or a chance for the oppossition to touch the ball. Outstanding deffence by Ben Roffey for the monkeys saw that stand in keeper Geoff Neill had a quite night in goals. While Brian Macklin made sure of the result grabbing a goal of his own. 2-0 Monkey Magic.

Division A & B - Week 8
Back to the Penrith Water Palace on Monday with the first game being played in a swimming pool. The poor ice reflected on the score board with neither Sawawawas or Wild Buffaloes managing a score for the regulation 40 minutes. Both teams came close many times but the poor footing and slippery ball resulted in many missed opportunities. Overtime was called for and it was Peter Yabley for Sawawawas who managed a steal on half way. His first shot was blocked by Tim Brown but Peter recovered and maybe shot again.. maybe passed it off Tim.. but it dribbled out to Dave Buckley who had followed up nicely and put away the goal. Benefit of the doubt for Peter and he was awarded the assist. A 1-0 overtime result for Sawawawas
Mighty Ducks vs Slytherin in the second and last A division match of the night. Again a tight affair on wetish ice with the final result being 1-1. Terry Giovas using his brand new STX Laser (which can be purchased from me for only $60) scored with a nice shot from a John Magnisalis pass. Steve Timmins scored Slytherin's goal. Steve Timmins completed a double by scoreing the overtime winner for Slytherin. The win and duty point for the night cement Slytherin's position on top of the ladder. However if you discount duty points there is only 2 games between 1st and 6th place meaning anyone at this stage could finish top or bottom of the ladder.
Golden Falcons minus Saxon Hooper but plus Tim Brown took on B Division leaders Guinness. B Division Points leader Sean Mitchell scored from a Beau McQuillan pass to take the lead 1-0. Guinness then set about laying seige to the Golden Falcons goal with shot after shot after goal mouth scramble after shot. Unfortunately for the competition leaders they couldnt get the goal they required and went down 1-0.
Polar Bears came out on a mission against the hapless Western Scorpions and decimated them 5 goals to nil. Three goals to Mark Kim and singles to Tracy Ivin and Brock Lesels for Polar Bears. The win moves Polar bear to third place with a game in hand on Guinness and Phoenix but three points behind. Western Scorpions dropped to 4th after the loss.
In the final game of the night the ice was still greasy and tricky with Phoenix and Ice Fury battling out an enthralling 0 all draw. Both teams played well using good skill and patience to protect possession and create good opportunities. In the end either team had enough opportunities to win the game but defence and goalies denied them.

Division C - Week 8
Slush Puppies Vs. Flaming Tomatos
Monday Night was the Penrith Swimming Pool.. Thursday night was the Penrith Ice Palace Carpark !! With no functioning machine to cut the ice the rink was left rough and cut up providing unbelievable grip. These conditions were similar to the old Blacktown days. Slush Puppies got off to a good start scoreing 4 unanswered goals by half time. Flaming Tomatos settled in the second half and took it to the Puppies, Nicole Pearce passing well to Andrew Chapman to score the first goal for Tomatos. However Slush Puppies applied some more pressure and Dirk Whelan was able to complete his hat trick taking the final score to 5-1. Mitchell Tuza and goal keeper Geoff Neil scored the Puppies other goals.
Allsorts Vs. 69ers
A grudge match of sorts (in Mark Kim's mind anyway) saw the two teams go hammer and tong for the full 40 minutes. Jay Schmidt put in a mammoth effort as he needed 3 points to move to the all time C division points scorer leader. Derivig a bizarre correlation between playing his 21st C division game just days before his 21st bithday on the 21st of September, Jay believed it was his destiny to score the three points he needed. However about the only correlation on the night was probably the 21 shots on goal he missed.. and so was the story for the whole game. Both teams squandering their many chances. 69ers scored first and held the lead for quite some time before Allsorts hit back. Then 69ers scored again and again Allsorts hit back. Neither team could manage another score and the game remained tied at 2-2. For 69ers Jay Schidmt got 1 goal (and two penalty minutes.. maybe this was his tri-destiny) with Eric Greentree getting the other. Danny Santamaria and Mark Kim scored for Allsorts.
Can Openers Vs. Monkey Magic
Monkey Magic set up with patient offence while Can Openers countered with amazing speed on the rough ice. In an even game Can Openers were able to remain undefeated in their intial season scoreing two breakaway goals. The first to Robert Courtney and the second to Aaron Calfas who had a mighty game terrorising the Monkey Magic defence with his pace. The loss dropped monkey magic out of the top four and the win gave Can Openers a two point break on the field.

More 50 Gamers
Congratulations to Tim Brown of Wild Buffaloes and Harry Sotiropoulos of Mighty Ducks who both played their 50th A grade games last night. The 50 game club for A grade now has 7 members and will have about 13 by the end of the season. Many more should join in the next season. 50 doesn't sound much but when you only play about 20 games per year it shows a player has been around for awhile and has shown good commitment to the sport. Hopefully we will get many more 50 gamers who grow to be 100 or 200 gamers.

Division A and B - Week 7
Guinness ground out a hard fought 1-0 win over Phoenix at the Penirth Swimming Pool last night. It was Craig Horsley who just did enough to score the late single goal which provided Guinness a game break at the top of the B division table. Given the wet conditions both teams played extremely well. Look for them both to figure prominently come finals time.
Karen Thompson scored early for Western Scorpions and they managed to hold out Ice Fury for a 1-0 win. The win and duty point catapulted Western Scorpions to third position on the B division ladder.
In the first A division game of the night Sky Devils were up against Sawawawas. Sky Devils coming off consectutive wins controlled the game well and through John Skiadas took a 1-0 lead. Sawawawas never a team to give up applied a tonne of pressure and Peter Yabsley scored with only 4 minutes to go to make it 1-1. The match looked destined for a draw and overtime until a costly turn over by Sky Devils in their own half handed the ball back to Sam Boer, Who laid it off to Peter Yabsley who beat the keeper and gave Sawawawas their second win of the season.
Thunderbirds became the first team to win 3 games this season when it defeated Slytherin by 2-0. Slyterin ran hard the entire game but couldnt convert their chances and slumped to their second defeat in succession. However they still maintain top position on the ladder on superior goal difference from Wild Buffaloes. Thunderbirds grabbing their third impressive win on the trot with both goals going to Saxon Hooper.
Wild Buffaloes with Tim Brown playing his 50th game played Mighty Ducks with Harry Sotiropoulos playing his 50th game. This game was fast end to end stuff. With both teams countering with counter after counter. Mighty Ducks had the best of it early but couldnt convert. Tim Brown then grabbed 2 goals just before half time giving Wild Buffaloes a commanding 2-0 lead. The second half was as pacey as the first. This time however with 9 minutes to go Mighty Ducks converted through John Magnisalis to make it 2-1 and set up a hard fought finish. Mighty Ducks pressed hard but Wild Buffaloes dropped back and defended well to deny them and grab second spot on the ladder. Mighty Ducks fell from 2nd to 5th with the loss but are only 2 points from 1st place. This is definately the most even A division competition ever with any team capable of winning the title. After letting in 9 goals in his last appearence as keeper Ryan Findlayson defied all attackers and earned a tough shut out.

Division C - Week 7
Icebergs Vs. Steelers
Steelers had their work cut out for them with a couple of new players to work with, and fell behind on the score board with a goal to Aaron Walsh for the Icebergs. However for the remainder of the game, both teams were very even and only a deflection of an Icebergs defender saw the scores level and remained that way till the end. 1-1.
Monkey Magic Vs. Allsorts
A very strong Allsorts side against Monkey Magic who were coming off a 5-0 victory, was the setup for a great match. Mark Kim, who was humbled in his B-Grade efforts on Monday night, started off trying some unorthodox keeping methods, and the Monkeys used this to their advantage getting momentum up from nothing situations. They soon hit with style, Tim Roffey being assisted by Bryan Macklin. At which Mark Kim removed himself from goals and after a few fumbles and lucky retrievals, passed off to Danny Santamaria who slammed the leveller home for Allsorts. In the second half Monkey Magic stepped it up a gear, and controlled a lot of the half, being rewarded by a goal to Bryan Macklin with about 5 minutes remaining. Then Allsorts pulled all stops. Luke P, Eric Fry and Brock Lessells lead by Mark Kim trying every trick in the book, applied much pressure only to be met with shut down, after shut down, after shut down. Monkeys held on for a 2-1 victory.
Slush Puppies Vs. Can Openers
The aim of this game was apparently to just slap the ball quaround to nowhere in particular, and the frustrations of not having control showed on both teams. All that seperated the teams was a lone goal to Andrew Leahy for the Can Openers to give a final score of 1-0. It must be said that both teams would peform a lot better if they didn't get caught up in arguments and sledging!!!

09-SEP-2002
Division A and B - Week 6
Week 6 sees the completion of round 1 for both A and B grade. In the first game Golden Falcons took on Polar Bears in a grudge match. With much slanging between the teams thoughout the week it was gonna be a fun match !! Golden Falcons started on fire bagging 2 goals to lead half at time by 2 goals to nil. Polar Bears fought back with goals to Kerry Baxter and Luke Petelczyc to make it 2 all. However Sean Mitchell slammed a goal home from a face off win to give Golden Falcons a 3-2 win. Notably Polar Bear mouth Mark Kim had little ball and didnt trouble the scorers.
Guinness belted Ice Fury by 7 goals to 1. John Skiadas was the lone scorer for Ice Fury with a hat trick to Dane Hansen and singles to Craig Horsley, David Daffy, Joanne Mitchell and Ryan Findlayson.
Western Scorpions challenged Phoenix in the final B grade clash of the night. Both teams had a tonne of opportunities and just couldnt finish off. Good performances by Steve Clarke for Phoenix and Garry Mitchell for Western Scorpions. Final score 0-0.
In form and undefeated Wild Buffaloes played Thunderbirds in the opening A division match. Saxon Hooper started the scoreing with a quick goal followed by Aaron Wigg taking Thunderbirds to a 2-0 half time lead. Wild Buffaloes came hard in the second half and controlled much of the play. However Thunderbirds held them off and countered with another 2 goals finally defeating Wild Buffaloes 4-0.
Slytherin also undefeated and top of the ladder faced off against bottom of the ladder Sky Devils. Sky Devils strengthened by the return of Con Sourlangos and George Pinirios controlled the game well. However with the lions share of possession Sky Devils were unable to convert and at the half it was nil all. With only a few minutes to go Andrew Nicholson belted in the winner and secured the upset for Sky Devils.

05-SEP-2002
Division C - Week 6
Monkey Magic Vs. Flaming Tomatos
An on fire Monkey Magic side took this one in style. They had a huge amount of possesion, and were hardly troubled in defence. Flaming Tomatos had no answer for the team work displays, from the Monkeys, the highlight being a goal initiated by Jo Mitchell deep in her own half flicked the ball over a couple of defenders to a running Sara Kristof, who used her speed and momentum to side step and out pace the rest of the defence. Drawing the keeper beautifully passed it off to a waiting Daniel Wong who tapped it into the empty net. Goals also to Sara Kristof, Tim Roffey, and two to Brian Macklin gave a full time score of 5-0.

02-SEP-2002
Division A and B - Week 5
Thunderbirds got their first win of the season vs Sky Devils winning 3 goals to 0. Troy Carroll scored within 20 seconds of taking the ice and then scored again only minutes later. Saxon Hooper scored the third goal shooting past kepper Scott Murray like he wasnt even there. The second half was dominated by Sky Devils but they were unable to convert any chances.
Mighty Ducks took on Sawawawas in the second game of the night. An interesting game as both teams rely on the counter attack as their main source of offence. However neither team had much luck converting until late in the second half Harry Sotiropoulos took it on himself to carry the ball deep into Sawawawas territory. After beating a couple players he clinically drew the keeper and flicked it past to set up the 1-0 win for Mighty Ducks.
Wild Buffaloes who were missing regular players left right and centre took on the might of the Division A leaders Slytherin. Against expectations it was Wild Buffaloes who scored first through Matt Robson. However Slytherin hung in their and Ryan Findlayson snuck a goal through from the blue line to even it up. OT was called on to see if anyone could claim a bonus point.. which they couldnt.
In the first B grade game of the night Phoenix and Polar Bears battled it out. Polar Bears had most of the possession but a deep set defence by Phoenix denied them time after time. Phoenix scored through Matt Robson and maintained their deep defence to hold on to the 1-0 win and claim 1st spot in B division.
Golden Falcons went head to head with Western Scorpions in the late game. It turned out to be a cracker with Western Scorpions claiming their first win of the season 4-3. Young Alex Blair scored twice for Scorpions with Steve Larte and Karen Thompson getting singles. Saxon Hooper scored 2 goals for the Falcons with Kylie Connolly scoreing her first mixed division goal in her 23rd B division game.

30-AUG-2002
Division C - Week 5
Icebergs Vs. Slush Puppies
It was a great game to watch, both teams fighting hard to create their opportunities, and it was David Montgomery who first broke through for the Slush Puppies, capitalising on a pass from behind the goals by James Ward. But there were always going to be more goals in this game. Garry Mitchell perfecting the hit the ball into the keeper and score off the rebound tecnique, scoring two in this manner to take the score into half time at 2-1 Icebergs. In the second half it was much of the same action, Slush Puppies first to break through again this time via Mitch Tuza scoreing his 3rd goal in two games with is new STX Laser stick (which you can purchase from me..see Ye Olde Shoppe for prices). It stayed 2-2 for most of the second half until late in the game Aaron Walsh drilled one in off a superb foot pass from Helen Walker to take the final score at 3-2 Icebergs.
Allsorts Vs. Flaming Tomatos
Flaming Tomatos were still suffering from teething problems and struggled against the self proclaimed brilliance of Mark Kim and his Allsorts. Allsorts had the ball to bat around more often (there wasn't much that actually resembled possesion for either team). Mark Kim scoreing 2, Danny Santamaria and Brendan Nigro claiming 1 each to give Allsorts the game 4-0.
Monkey Magic Vs. Steelers
Steelers forgot to turn up and forfeited to Monkey Magic handing them a 5-0 forfeit win. Although it was probably lucky for steelers as Monkey Magic were on fire winning the scratch match 5-0 anyway.

26-AUG-2002
Division A and B - Week 4
Top of the table Guinness took on the winless Western Scorpions. You would think it to be a mismatch however the competition in B grade is very even and Guinness had to work very hard for their 1-0 win. David Daffy scoreing for Guinness securing top spot.
In the second game Golden Falcons came up aganist Phoenix. Phoenix scored first and held the lead until the end of the game. However Golden Falcons were always in it fighting back but finally going down 3-2. Sean Mitchell scored both goals for Golden Falcons while Phoenix shared it around with Matt Robson, Stephen Clarke and Andrew Chapman all scoreing.
Polar Bears tackled Ice Fury in the last B division game of the night. A very tight game with neither team converting their many opportunities until Polar Bears put away two late goals through Mark Kim and Kerry Baxter.
Sawawawas played Thunderbirds in a dog fight. Neither team able to score in either half. Extra time was called on to determine a bonus point winner. Sawawawas kept their heads, controlling the ball and Peter Yabsley did a "Saxon" past Saxon Hooper for the winner.
A winless Sky Devils took on the Mighty Ducks in the last game of the night. Andrew Nicholson scored all the goals of the match leading Sky Devils to a 2-0 win. The win really clogs up the table with only 2 points separating Slytherin who are first and Sky Devils who are 5th. Wont mention poor Thunderbirds who are last.

22-AUG-2002
C Division - Week 4
69ers Vs. Slush Puppies
In what started out as very physicall contest, the Slush Puppies were patient with their possesion waiting for the perfect opportunities to score three goals (Mitch Tuza(2), Dirk Wheelan(1)). While the 69ers attempted too many long shots and on several occasions failed to use their free players, thus were held scoreless. 3-0 Slush Puppies. Mitchell Tuza scored not only his first ever goal but got a double in his 19th game of broomball. I might add it was only his third game with his new STX laser stick which you can buy from me...
Steelers Vs. Flaming Tomatos
Previous form said that the Steelers were in for a comfortable night, and the score line on this occassion agreed. However the Flaming Tomatos did create several opportunities, one of which involving four attackers versus the Steelers goal keeper. Still they could not convert until, a brilliantly worked break away by Tim Boyce assisting Andrew Chapman in the Flaming Tomatos first regular season goal (and first ever). This made it 4-1 top Steelers.
Icebergs Vs. Can Openers
A very fast paced encounter. Icebergs got off to an early lead through Aaron Walsh combining with Craig Smith. Andrew Leahy got the Can Openers level before half time, and setup a dog fight in the second half. Break away after break away for both teams made it seem like a tennis match, and while still following this trend Andrew Leahy mannaged to hammer one through the Icebergs defence for his and the teams second goal of the night. This is how it finished 2-1 Can Openers.

19-AUG-2002
Division A and B - Week 3
A Peter Yabsleyless Sawawawas took on A division leaders Slytherin. Was a very solid performance by both teams on difficult wet ice. Neither team could score and 0-0 was the final result. Steve Timmins for Slytherin scored in OT to gain Slytherin the bonus point.
Sky Devils after the bye last week were up against Wild Buffaloes. In an amazing game Sky Devils took a 4-0 lead going into half time. Wild Buffaloes charged out after the break but Sky Devils held them at bay for 8 minutes. Then in the space of 4 minutes the score was 4 all. Luke Simmonds then completed the comeback for Wild Buffaloes when he scored their 5th goal. Sky Devils had come to far to let it slip and with 8 seconds on the clock and a player in the sin bin evened it up at 5 all. Tim Brown grabbed the overtime bon
